Ordering a tarpaulin that turns up smaller than expected is the most common mistake tarp buyers make – and it usually comes down to one detail: cut size versus finished size. Here is how to measure properly and choose a size that actually covers the job.
Cut size vs finished size
Most tarpaulins are sold by cut size – the size of the fabric before the edges are folded and hemmed. Hemming typically loses 2–5% on each dimension, so a 4m x 5m cut-size tarp may finish around 3.9m x 4.85m. Always allow for this when the fit is tight.
Allow for overhang and tie-down
A tarp that exactly matches the footprint of what it covers will not protect it. As a rule of thumb:
- Flat items (trailers, wood piles): add at least 30–50cm on every side.
- Three-dimensional loads (machinery, furniture stacks): measure over the top of the item in both directions, then add the overhang.
- Roof repairs: extend well past the damaged area – at least 1m beyond on all sides – so water sheds onto sound roof, not into the hole.
Common UK tarpaulin sizes and what they suit
- 2m x 3m: garden furniture, motorbikes, log store fronts
- 4m x 5m: small trailers, ride-on mowers, sand and cement on site
- 6m x 8m: car and boat covers, roof repairs, market stalls
- 8m x 12m and up: haystacks, scaffolding wraps, structural covers
